Can a lender request an FHA case number prior to taking a loan application?

A case number can be obtained only when the lender has an active loan application for the subject Borrower and property. In order to obtain a case number, the Mortgagee must:

•             provide the subject Borrower’s name, Social Security Number (SSN), and date of birth (see additional information regarding SSN requirements provided in Handbook 4000.1 II.A.1.b.ii(A)(1)(a));

•             provide the property address; and

•             certify that it has an active loan application for the subject Borrower and property.

The Mortgagee is not required to input appraiser information at the time the case number is ordered.

For additional information see Handbook 4000.1 II.A.1.a.iii(B)(1) available at:   https://www.hud.gov/program_offices/administration/hudclips/handbooks/hsgh
